The Atlantic Academy Rhineland-Palatinate was opened in Kaiserslautern on February 22nd, 1996 by Minister-President of the Land Rhineland-Palatinate Kurt Beck. The Academy’s mission is to extend the relationship between US citizens and citizens of Rhineland-Palatinate, which has been shaped by the military presence in the region, through cultural, economical, and interpersonal exchange. Since October 16th, 1996, the Atlantic Academy is organized as a voluntary non-profit association. The Academy has been an independent institution since January 1st, 1997. The chairman of the Academy is the State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of the Land Rhineland-Palatinate Heike Raab. The first director and "founding father" of the Academy from 1996 to 2010 was Dr. habil. Werner Kremp. In March 2010 he was succeeded by Wolfgang Tönnesmann.
The Atlantic Academy in Rhineland-Palatinate has gained wide respect through its ambitious conference and seminar programs as well as its publication series “Atlantic Texts.” The subject-specific conferences, seminars, workshops, and lectures for different target groups are realized in cooperation with regional and national partners.
