One year after the U.S. elections and one month after the election in Germany, our teacher training seminar will deal with new political developments rippling through democracies in the western world.
Russian hacks in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections and possibly in the upcoming German elections, disinformation campaigns through digital media, populist movements, autocratic tendencies, and attacks on the traditional political and media landscapes pose challenges unprecedented in the post-World War II era. As a result, the European Union is facing disintegrating forces while in the United States the system of checks and balances is under stress.
These developments play an increasingly important role in the class room as senior high school students will soon have to take on their responsibilities as voters. Therefore, with the help of German and American experts, we will analyze the new challenges that democracies face. Focusing on the situation in the U.S., we will discuss the similarities and differences with regard to Germany as well as their implications for the future of the German-American relationship. We will also offer methods and tools for teaching the subject in the class room.
In addition, we will present the next round of the U.S. Embassy Going Green project which will offer another opportunity for teachers and their students to engage in hands-on environmental projects in cooperation with schools in the United States.
