Description:

Over the past decades, the media have portrayed the European far right as “Putin’s puppets”. While this image is stereotypical, it is true that most far-right parties have been supportive, or at least not critical, of Putin and Russia over the last years.

The 2022 (re-)invasion of Ukraine has put all relations with Russia under a microscope, as sanctions are hitting Russia, and potentially its enablers, hard. How has the European far right responded to the Russian re-invasion? What do these responses say about the “Putin’s puppets” thesis? And how will they effect far-right collaboration and mainstreaming in the future?

Prof. Cas Mudde, one of the best-known and most distinguished experts on populism and the far right, will speak about these current developments and what the impact of the Russian re-invasion will be on the European far right.
