In the year 2014, the Ministry of Interior Rheinland-Pfalz initiated the project “Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz! Our Neighbors from the USA”, in which 11 communities adjacent to the military bases in Ramstein, Baumholder, and Spangdahlem are currently participating. (Baumholder, Herforst, Spangdahlem, Binsfeld, Neunkirchen am Potzberg, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Kottweiler-Schwanden, Hütschenhausen, Niedermohr, Steinwenden, Glan-Münchweiler).
The main purpose of the project is to create and enhance opportunities for locally stationed US citizens to join in the life and activities of their respective community. Both sides can thereby benefit from this win-win situation.
With an improved provision of more comprehensive information about local and regional services, US families are supported in the process of a successful integration into the local community. Knowing more about German customs, local businesses, clubs or events can help with the transition and challenges of a PCS.
On the other side, the communities involved experience an even better and more open German-American relationship in the communal life and therefore want to kindly encourage their fellow American citizens to come and meet their new neighbors in the local clubs and at their events!
So far, the results of the project show very positive mutual relations, but also reveal a potential for improvement. In a long-term perspective, the goal is to optimize and expand the measures that promote the integration of US service members into the community. Hence, the intention is to strengthen local structures of the community permanently with the result of an increased quality of life for all community members.
